Topology Optimization Methods for 3D Structural Problems: A Comparative Study

The work provides an exhaustive comparison of some representative families topology optimization methods for 3D structural optimization, such as the Solid Isotropic Material with Penalization (SIMP), Level-set, Bidirectional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO), and Variational Topology (VARTOP) methods. main differences similarities these approaches are then highlighted from algorithmic standpoint. is carried out via study a set numerical benchmark cases using industrial-like fine-discretization meshes (around 1 million finite elements), Matlab common computational platform, to ensure fair comparisons. Then, results obtained every case different compared in terms cost, quality, achieved minimum value objective function, robustness computations (convergence function topology). Finally, quantitative qualitative presented, which, attempt qualification methods, their relative performance, done.
